Angel’s Dining Car: A Visit to Florida’s Oldest Diner

When you first pull up at Angel’s Dining Car in Palatka, Florida, don’t be alarmed if you hear cars loudly honking. They’re not honking at you. Those are just hungry patrons, and those curbside honks are just part of the allure and nostalgia of Florida’s oldest diner. 

Porter Angel first opened the doors of this unique restaurant in 1932, and over 90 years later, you can still have the same nostalgic experience. Curbside service, authentic retro decor, old-fashioned milkshakes, and fresh burgers are just a few of the things you’ll experience when visiting this train car that was converted into one of the best places to eat in Palatka. 

Fresh-cut Onion Rings, the Signature Black Bottom, and the Secret of What Makes Angel’s Burgers So Tasty 

Angel’s brings the vintage ambience full force, and it is without a doubt one of the most memorable places you’ll ever eat. Some people come to be able to escape the modern day for a bit, and others come out for the fun car shows that happen the second Saturday night of each month. However, the actual food at Angel’s is what takes the experience to a whole other level. The striped canopies that are draped from the train car’s exterior give a teaser of some of the diner favorites that you can find on the menu. For a small restaurant though, it has a pretty diverse selection with some notable menu items. 

Angel’s is very well known for their fresh burgers, and meat-lovers will detect the difference as soon as they bite down. Angel’s only uses 100% pure, fresh beef that’s never been frozen. One of the secrets that the staff has shared is that they hand-roll the meat and don’t make it into a patty until it’s ready to be cooked. They’re doing something right, because people from all over the world visit just to try their burgers. Depending on your appetite, you’ll have a variety of options that range from a quarter pound up to a one pound. While the cheeseburger platter is the biggest seller there, another signature item is also extremely popular: the Black Bottom. This hamburger patty that’s paired on a bun with eggs and bacon is a unique and tasty twist that you won’t find elsewhere. 

Aside from burgers, Angel’s has other diner favorites including a full breakfast menu, fresh-cut onion rings, french fries, and cole slaw. If you visit on a Tuesday or Friday, you’ll also be lucky enough to try Lou’s Famous Fried Chicken. But this retro diner has a robust menu that also includes items such as frog legs, chicken gizzards and livers, flounder, shrimp, clams, wings, pork chops, BBQ pork, and Philly cheesesteak sandwiches. 

Dirty Sodas, Old-fashioned Milkshakes, and The Pusalow

With all of the scrumptious food, you’ll also need something to wash it all down – and Angel’s doesn’t slack in that department either. The beverage selection gives you the vintage soda fountain feel, but with some modern twists woven in. You can try one of their signature Dirty Sodas like the Watermelon Hubba Bubba or the Cotton Candy, or you can dream up your own creation. There’s an endless selection, as you can pair your fountain beverage with a vast array of flavors. The homemade cherry coke is never a bad choice, though. 

You can also never go wrong with an old-fashioned milkshake. It may seem a little indulgent after the generous-sized portions of your meal, but it’s not every day that you get to step back in time and eat inside of a train car – so just do it. They come in a wide array of flavors such as chocolate, cherry, vanilla, strawberry, peanut butter, banana, and blueberry. 

There’s one other special beverage you’ll  want to add to your must-try list, too – the Pusalow. What exactly is a Pusalow? Well, it was Porter Angel’s favorite drink, and it has a creamy chocolate flavor. Other than that, we’re not entirely sure. This is one of the secret recipes at Angel’s Dining Car, and is just one more thing that makes this place extra special because you won’t find this anywhere else. This tasty treat pays honor to the founder of Angel’s, and is the perfect delicious finale to your visit to Florida’s oldest diner. 

What to Expect When You Visit Angel’s Dining Car 

It’s hard to miss the colorful green and pink awnings that adorn the top of the stainless steel railcar. It’s a colorful contrast to the surrounding historic architecture, and it’s hard not to smile when you see it. It’s even harder not to instinctively pull your car in and follow your curiosities inside. 

If you want to eat at Angel’s (and trust us, you do), you have a few options. As a part of sticking to its authentic past, curbside service is still offered. You can pull up outside, honk your horn, and someone will come out to take your order. You’ll see the signs that say “Honk for curb service,” but those aren’t there just for decoration. This service is truly offered, and the staff enjoys honoring Angel’s history in this way. 

You’ll also find outside tables where you can dine al fresco. There you’ll be accompanied by a statue of Elvis – another tribute to the days gone by. Rumor also has it that the real Elvis actually dined there back in the day. According to local stories, some other famous people who’ve enjoyed meals there over the years include Tom Petty, Ronald Reagan, Babe Ruth, the Reverend Billy Graham, and members of the bands Alabama and Lynyrd Skynyrd. 

While an outside meal with Elvis and carhop service are really cool, you’ll likely be intrigued to see what’s inside Angel’s dining car, too. And yes, you should at least take a peek – it’s unlike any other restaurant you’ve ever experienced. As soon as you open the metal door, you’ll be whisked away to a simpler, yet more colorful period of time. 

Your eyes will immediately gravitate to the neon sign on the wall and you’ll likely just stand there in awe for a moment as you take it all in. As your gaze scans the inside of the dining car, you’ll see the checkerboard floor, juke box, and records on the wall – and you’ll immediately feel the old-timey vibes. There’s a lot of visual sensory happening at once, but make sure you take note of the front end of the ‘57 Chevy that adorns the wall on the end of the car. The space is narrow, but that’s to be expected. After all, this is a real train car. 

You’ll find table seating inside, but you can also grab one of the seats alongside the counter if you want to strike up a conversation with the friendly staff and locals. If you choose to eat inside, be ready to take a step back in time and fully embrace the good ol’ days. This is a true old-school diner experience, and is a well-preserved and authentic piece of Palatka’s history.
