Putnam County is located in northeast Florida and is situated along the St. Johns River, just about 50 miles south of Jacksonville. In Palatka, visitors will find an Amtrak station and a municipal airport. You can even arrive by boat via the St. Johns River. Palatka 

With a vibrant historic district, Palatka serves as the county seat and is the largest city in Putnam County. Visitors can find a fun downtown full of murals and locally owned shops. When you work up an appetite, you can get a bite to eat at Florida’s oldest diner – Angel’s Dining Car. Adrenaline junkies can skydive or ride ATVs, while nature enthusiasts will want to plan a day at Ravine Gardens State Park. It offers abundant foliage and dramatic views that you can’t find elsewhere in Florida. This community also hosts a variety of events such as the Palatka Farmers Market, Palatka Porchfest, and one of the area’s oldest Christmas parades that dates back to 1909.
Crescent City 

Crescent City is a water-lovers paradise and offers an abundance of opportunities to get on the water with multiple boat ramps. St. Johns Watersports also offers jet ski rentals for those looking for high speed fun. Anglers love Crescent Lake, and you’ll usually see at least a few there reeling in their catch. History buffs will want to take a free, self-guided tour of Crescent City to explore some of the city’s most notable spots, including the state’s oldest Cypress tree. While you’re roaming around downtown, you’ll likely see some of the city’s resident peacocks as well. Visitors can also play a round of Disc Golf at Hallie’s Landing, and then grab a bite at one of the city’s amazing restaurants such as 3 Bananas, Belle’s Bistro, Kelleo’s Kitchen, and Baja Taco. You may also want to plan your trip to coincide with one of the area’s annual festivals, such as the annual St. Johns Catfish Festival that happens each April.
Melrose

This small town is about halfway between Gainesville and Jacksonville, and is an artsy community with several galleries that showcase the creations of the crafty locals. If you get inspired, it’s also not too hard to join in on a variety of art classes at Mossman Hall. The Melrose Center hosts a variety of events and is a fun spot where you can grab a coffee and start your day. For lunch or dinner, check out Blue Water Bay – they serve up some of the area’s best seafood. Lake Santa Fe is a favorite for boaters and anglers, and if you go, you have to stop by Chiappini’s bait shop and convenience store, which has been around for 90 years. The area has a robust history, and the Melrose Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Welaka 

Welaka is a Native American name for the St. Johns River, and this is another great place for nature lovers to explore. This is actually one of the most well preserved areas alongside the St. Johns River, and has multiple restaurants that offer waterfront dining. In addition to the notable waterway, there’s also plenty of fun on the land here. The Welaka State Forest is a hiker’s playground, but if you want to cycle or go horseback riding, there are options for that, too. One trail will even take you to a natural spring. Be sure to visit the aquarium at the Welaka National Fish Hatchery as well – the only of its kind in the state. This is a fun, free activity that allows you to learn more about the area’s intriguing wildlife.
Interlachen

The Florida Southern Railway came through this area in the 1870s and they still honor their railroad past, with the caboose in downtown serving as a central location that is home to many of the town’s events. This active community has great playgrounds for the kids, but also has exercise equipment at Jenkins Park. If you visit, also make sure you visit Carl Duval Moore State Forest, which is a scenic place to hike and see wildlife.


Pomona Park is home to Ever Afters Farms, and is one of the most beautiful u-pick vineyards in the state. Visitors can come out from mid July through early September to pick muscadines from the vines, choosing from multiple varieties – with some better for eating, and others better for making wine. The farm also hosts events like Pilates, Bible studies, and a sip-and-shop market. If you go, you can also check out Middleton Beach, nestled alongside Lake Broward.
This is for the true daredevils! If you want to see Putnam County from a bird’s eye view, Skydive Palatka offers you a way to do it. You’ll ascend to over 10,000 feet before free-falling at over 120 mph as you take in the scenic views of the St. Johns River. A trained instructor will make the leap with you, but many people get hooked after one jump, and classes are available so you can get certified to jump on your own.
