The Melrose Center: The First Stop You Need to Make When Visiting Melrose, Florida

If you’re looking for small-town, artsy vibes, paired with delicious food and outdoor adventures, Melrose, Florida may be your perfect escape. It’s tucked away in the northwest corner of Putnam County (though parts of the small community lie within the borders of four counties), and it’s about half an hour away from both Palatka and Gainesville. It’s a great add-on when you visit either of those locations, but the town of Melrose is definitely worthy of being a destination itself – especially if you’re seeking an authentic, “Old Florida” experience. The welcoming locals are always happy to share their tips when you visit, too – and that’s why your first stop needs to be at one of the area’s popular local hangouts: The Melrose Center. 

The Melrose Center Serves as the Home of the Lake Area Welcome Center

When you visit a new place, it’s always great to be able to chat with the locals to find out more about the area – and The Melrose Center is the place to do that. The official Lake Area Welcome Center is located there, and you’ll find an array of brochures and pamphlets that showcase the best things to see and do in Melrose. Even better, you’ll have a chance to sit down and chat with the locals who know the area best. Let them know what type of things you enjoy, and they’ll give you their personal recommendations. 

For example, if you share that you’re outdoorsy, they may direct you to check out DJ’s Kayak Rentals, located right across the street. Putnam County is known as the “Trail Hub” of northeast Florida, and that includes the area’s paddling trails. If you’re into history, make sure to ask them for their guide that shows the free, self-guided tour of almost 80 historic sites throughout the community.

The Delicious Cafe

The worst mistake you can make when visiting The Melrose Center is not coming hungry. You’ll quickly see this isn’t your typical welcome center where you just stop in and pick up brochures. They have a wonderful selection of fair-trade coffee, tea, and smoothies, but they also have a full restaurant that has a very diverse menu. You’ll find a little something for everyone – including those looking for vegetarian, gluten-free, and low-carb options. 

Breakfast items include things such as eggs, bacon, and sausage, but you can pair that with unique twists like rosemary toast and sweet potato hash. You can also choose from a variety of other items such as breakfast burritos, omelettes, and bagels. There is one breakfast item you absolutely, positively have to try when visiting though: their muffins. It can be hard to choose between the Chocolate Zucchini and Purple Sweet Potato muffins, so take our advice and just order one of each. Actually, these are so popular that many people get more to take home – each flavor is also sold in to-go packages of four. 

The breakfast items are so good that they sell them all day, but there’s an equally impressive lunch menu as well. A few of the options include cheeseburgers, black bean burgers, Cuban sandwiches, salads, soups, and spinach and cheese or curried sweet potato hand pies. You can also try some of the interesting small plates that include items such as garlic cheese curds with ranch, falafel with tzatziki, and golden fried tofu with peanut sauce. 

You can’t go wrong with whatever you order. Take it to go or stay awhile. The Melrose Center has both indoor and outdoor seating, and it’s a nice place to hang out and visit with the friendly locals. 

Local Art and Music

The artsy vibes of The Melrose Center warmly greet you as soon as you pull into the parking lot. You’ll immediately see fun sculptures outside of the Studios of Melrose Gallery & Gifts. It’s open Tuesdays, Thursdays, and during the Melrose Art Walk that happens the first Friday of each month. As you walk through the cafe and welcome center, though, you’ll have the opportunity to peruse more creations from local artists. The Melrose Center also has live music on Thursday and Saturday nights. There are stages both inside and outside, and it’s a fun place to enjoy a variety of genres. 

More Fun Events

In addition to weekly live music and monthly art walks, The Melrose Center also hosts a number of events that bring the community together. When you visit, you’ll be treated as an honorary local as well, so get involved in some of the fun activities. There’s never a dull moment, and you’ll find things such as mom’s groups and bridge lessons, but also events that allow you to get dressed up as a witch and paddle the scenic waterways surrounding Melrose. The annual Witches’ Paddle, held each October as a fundraiser for local organizations, is one of the area’s most popular events. 

While many of the events serve the purpose of bringing people together for some fun recreational activities, The Melrose Center also hosts wellness events that are at the core of their mission. The center is run by a local nonprofit group called Common Thread International, Inc. The founders and volunteers of this group help the community in many ways, but one of the efforts most near and dear to their hearts is providing healthcare for all. The free Melrose Healthcare Fair is a monthly event at The Melrose Center that offers screenings for things such as A1C, cholesterol, blood pressure, and autism. It also gives attendees a chance to meet with a physician and have access to prescription and referral services. Walk-ins are welcome, but you can also call The Melrose Center ahead of time to schedule an appointment. This is a free service that is offered to all – not just Melrose residents. The health-focused events are held during the day on the first Friday of each month, so you can come for the medical screenings, and stay for the Melrose Art Walk later that evening.

Pick up Souvenirs in the Gift Shop

No trip is complete without picking up a few souvenirs to take home, right? In addition to the Studios of Melrose Gallery & Gifts, there’s also a gift shop within The Melrose Center’s main building. You’ll find local arts and crafts, as well as other fair-trade items from around the world. Paintings, pottery, crocheted hats, and greeting cards are just a few of the things you can choose from. If you adored the organic, fair trade coffee you had in the coffee shop, you can even take home a bag of the “Good Morning Melrose” blend that’s roasted just a few miles down the road.
