Our area is full of exciting things to do and offers a little something for everyone. Here are a few of our local favorites; consider this a starting point to your adventure.
For hikers: Explore scenic ravines at Ravine Gardens State Park


For those who don’t mind getting a little dirty: Rev up for muddy ATV adventures through off-road trails
For some four-wheeled adventure, check out Hog Waller in Palatka. This 1,100-acre outdoor oasis is the perfect spot to bring your ATV or UTV. Some of the roads are old railroad beds from the Ocklawaha Valley Railroad and support roads from the old Rodman Sawmill that operated in this area in the early 1900s. And yes, there’s a mud pit to play in, too. No ride? Rent a UTV on-site. Many people also come as spectators for the exciting events – including the All Hours Weekends that allow you to ride all day and night. There’s a campground onsite that can accommodate RVs, but they also have a few cabins available as well.
For wildlife lovers: Meet native fish species at Welaka National Fish Hatchery's aquarium


For anglers: Fish for trophy bass on the legendary St. Johns River
Putnam County is located within the lower basin of the St. Johns River and is called the “Bass Capital of the World.” This area has hosted countless major tournaments, but also appeals to all visitors looking to spend a leisurely day on the river in hopes of tight lines. While bass are abundant, anglers will also be pleased to find bluegill, crappie, stripers, catfish, redfish, tarpon, and more on the river and its connecting tributaries that include Little Lake George and Lake Crescent. For hunters: Go hunting with God’s Country Outfitters
With over 20,000 acres of hunting ground that takes you from the swamps to the hills, you aren’t lacking for options when you book a hunt with God’s Country Outfitters in San Mateo. If you’re adventurous enough to embark on an alligator hunt with them, they can help you create a pair of boots, a purse, or even furniture with your harvest. The experienced guides also offer trips for hunting boar and turkey, and have multi-day packages that include lodging and meals. The lodge even offers an outdoor space that is a hunter’s playground – complete with a range and shooting tower. It’s always exciting to relive the day’s adventures as you share stories by the fire pit, too.
For paddlers: Paddle Putnam’s scenic waterways
Putnam County is becoming known as the “Trail Hub” of Northeast Florida,” and those trails aren’t limited to land. This is a great place to bring your canoe, kayak, or paddleboard, as there’s a multitude of paddling options that await on Putnam’s blueways. You’ll find options for beginner, intermediate, and advanced paddlers that each offer different scenery. Visitors also have the unique opportunity to take a guided sunset kayak tour. As a bonus, paddlers will be treated to the amazing spectacle of seeing hundreds of colony bats leaving for their nightly adventure. The Sunset Bat Paddle departs from the Palatka City Marina and kayaks are provided for those that don’t have one. Sunset and Saturday Morning Boat Tours are also available for those who don’t want to paddle, but still want to enjoy some time on the water with a local guide.
For history buffs: Take a step back into Putnam County's diverse past
Putnam County has a diverse history that includes riverboats, railroads, and more – and there are many ways to explore the area’s past. A few to add to your list include: The David Browning Railroad Museum, and The Putnam County Historical Society House and Museum – all in Palatka, and the Daurer History Museum in Melrose. You can also take a free, self-guided history tour through Crescent City. While you’re here, you’ll also want to plan a visit to the Mount Royal Archaeological Site, which is one of Florida’s largest Native American mounds. (Check days and hours ahead of time for museums, as they can vary.)
For art enthusiasts: Follow colorful murals on a self-guided art walk
Palatka shows off its artsy side with an array of vibrant murals that adorn the streets. As you stroll through the historic downtown district, you’ll be greeted by the colorful creations that showcase the area’s history through art. Experience the art on a deeper level by taking a self-guided Palatka mural tour that includes audio that you can play on your mobile device as you take it all in.
For foodies: Taste history at Florida's oldest continuously operating diner


Angel’s Dining Car has been in operation since 1932 and gets the bragging rights of being Florida’s oldest diner. As soon as you drive up, you’ll realize this will be one of the most unique dining experiences you’ve ever had. The restaurant is housed inside of an old railroad car in Palatka, and brings all of the nostalgic ambience with the checkerboard floors and jukebox inside. Burgers, fries, and onion rings are popular there, but they’re also known for their Black Bottom Sandwich – a mix of ground beef, scrambled eggs, and bacon served on a bun. Just make sure to save room for a hand-spun milkshake.
For adrenaline junkies: Soar above Florida with tandem skydiving
This is for the true daredevils! If you want to see Putnam County from a bird’s eye view, Skydive Palatka offers you a way to do it. You’ll ascend to over 10,000 feet before free-falling at over 120 mph as you take in the scenic views of the St. Johns River. A trained instructor will make the leap with you, but many people get hooked after one jump, and classes are available so you can get certified to jump on your own.
Of course, this list only scratches the surface of what you can discover here. One word of caution, though – there’s no way you can fit all of the fun into one day.
